Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound advantageously from a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon in an oxidation method with boric acid, by treating the unreacted raw material recovered from the oxidation product with an alkali and further with hydrogen, esterifying the hydrogenated material, and recycling the esterification product through the oxidation stage.
CONSTITUTION: A saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon is oxidized in the liquid phase with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of a boron compound and subsequently the free alcohol is borated. The unreacted raw material is then separated through distillation procedures. The distillation residue is hydrolyzed, and the organic layer is saponified and further purified, to give the titled compound. On the other hand, the fatty acid is eliminated through separation procedures from the recovered unreacted raw material with alkali-treating, and then treated with hydrogen. A boron compound in an atomic equivalent amount of 0.33 or more as B based on the alcohol contained in the material is added, and the hydrogenated material is then esterified in a nitrogen gas stream or under reduced pressure and recycled through the above-metioned oxidation stage, to suppress the production of a polymeric substance which makes the continuous operation difficult, and give the titled compound in high yield and quality.
