Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain continuously the titled compound useful as a raw material for synthesizing oxalic acid, etc., by separating the reaction product of CO and an ester of nitrous acid into a condensate and a noncondensing gas by a condenser, reprocessing the gas into the ester of nitrous acid and recycling it.
CONSTITUTION: A gas comprising CO, an ester of nitrous acid, NO, etc. is sent through the pipe 21 to the reactot 1 filled with a catalyst of a platinum group metal and subjected to a catalytic reaction in a gaseous phase. The reaction product gas is introduced through the pipe 11 to the condenser 2, cooled and separated into a condensate containing an oxalic acid diester and a noncondensing gas containing NO. The condensate is taken out through the pipe 12 the outside of the system, and the oxalic acid diester is obtained by distillation, etc. While, the noncondensing gas is introduced through the the pipe 14 to the reprocessing column 3, it is reacted with a molecular oxygen-containing gas and an alcohol to form an ester of nitrous acid, and the ester of nitrous acid is recycled through the pipes 19 and 21 to the reaction process.
