Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare methacrylic acid in high conversion and yield, by catalytically oxidizing methacrolein in gas phase, separating the produced methacrylic acid by the counter-current contact with an absorption solvent under specific temperature condition, and oxidizing the unreacted methacrolein in the second oxidation stage.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture containing methacrylic acid, produced by the catalytic gas-phase oxidation of methacrolein with molecular oxygen and steam introduced into a reactor 2 through a pipe 1, is cooled and introduced into a methacrylic acid absorbing column 6. Absorbing solvent such as water, etc., is introduced into the absorbing column through pipes 7 and 8, and the above mixture is made contact countercurrently with the absorbing solvent under the top temperature of ≥ 60°C and the bottom temperature of ≥ 65°C. A solution containing methacrylic acid is obtained from the bottom. The unreacted methacrolein and steam are discharged from the top, and introduced to the second stage oxidation process 12 where the methacrolein is again oxidized in gas phase to methacrylic acid.
EFFECT: Separation and recovering processes of the unreacted methacrolein can be eliminated. Methacrylic acid can be effectively recovered.
