Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, by mixing a molecular oxygen-containing gas with an ethylene-containing gas in an ethylene oxide absorber in the vapor- phase catalytic oxidation of ethylene in the presence of a silver catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction product gas formed through the vapor-phase oxidation in the reactor 5 is cooled to a given temperature in the cooler 6, introduced from the line 101 into the bottom of the absorption column 7, and brought into contact with the absorbing liquid introduced from the top via the line 106 to have the ethylene absorbed. The liquid is then fed from the bottom through the lines 108 and 10 to the ethylene oxide stripper 8 to strip the ethylene from the top, and the bottoms are circulated through the column 7. The molecular oxygen-containing gas is fed from the lines 12 and 221 to the column 7, jetted from the orifices 223 in the liquid on the tray 103 and mixed with the ethylene-containing gas, and fed from the lines 105 and 13 to the reactor 5.
