Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain anthraquinone in one step in a high yield, by bringing a gas containing phthalic anhydride and benzene into contact with a catalyst consisting of titanium oxide and/or tin oxide, using CO2 as a reaction diluent.
CONSTITUTION: Phthalic anhydride (P) is reacted with benzene (B) in a molar ratio of (P) to (B) of about 1:3W30 in the presence of a catalyst consisting of titanium oxide and/or tin oxide at 300W600°C, preferafbly 350W550°C to give anthraquinone. The optimum reaction temperature depends on the feed rate, e.g. gas space velocity (SV), of the raw material to the amount of the catalyst used, and the temperature is set at a higher one with increasing SV. The temperature is lower with decreasing SV. The use of CO2 as a diluent inhibits decarboxylation of phthalic anhydride to increase the yield of the title compound. The catalyst may be supported on a proper carrier.
