Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound easily, in high yield, without using hot steam and oxygen, by contacting an alkylbenzene with a catalyst comprising molten alloy containing potassium under inert atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula III or IV (R is H or 1W4C alkyl) is prepared by contacting a compound of formula I or II with a catalyst comprising molten alloy cotaining potassium under inert atmosphere for several seconds. The potassium-containing alloy is the one having a melting point of ≤600°C, pref. ≤500°C, such as an alloy of potassium and lead, indium, thallium, tin, bismuth, etc. To improve the conversion, it is desirable to dilute the alkylbenzene with inert gas or a saturated hydrocarbon.
EFFECT: Very long catalytic life.
