Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare ethylene oxide industrially advantageously, by giving a concentration gradient of an alkali metal component to a catalyst layer in the long direction of the layer in oxidizing ethylene with molecular oxygen in the presence of silver and an alkali metal component supported on a carrier.
CONSTITUTION: A solution containing an alkali metal compound is injected from one end of a reactor tube packed with a carrier supporting silver or silver and a small amount of an alkali metal component to give a continuous or stepwise con- centration gradient to the catalyst layer in the long direction of the layer. A gas comprising ethylene and molecular oxygen is passed through the reactor to give ethylene oxide in a high selectivity and oxygen conversion readily with a long catalyst life without the danger of hot spots. The silver concentration in the layer is preferably substantially uniform.
