Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare urethane at increased reaction rate, economically, by reacting an aromatic nitro compound with CO and an OH-containing compound, in the presence of a Pd catalyst and a small amount of hydrogen.
CONSTITUTION: Urethane is prepared by reacting an aromatic nitro compound with CO and mono-, poly-hydric alcohol or phenol which may have a substitution group such as halogen, sulfoxide, etc., in the presence of a Pd catalyst (metallic Pd which) may contain arbitrary amount of Se or Te; metallic Pd or Pd compound supported with a carrier), and 0.001W10 moles, pref. 0.01W5 moles (based on 1 mole of the nitro group of the aromatic nitro compound) of hydrogen. Addition of a cocatalyst such as tertiary amine, improves the yield of urethane.
EFFECT: Water gas, oxo gas, etc. can be used as a raw material.
