CONSTITUTION: The liquid reaction between an olefin of formula I (R1-4 are H, alkyl or aryl) such as ethylene, a carboxylic acid of formual II (R5 is alkyl or aryl) and molecular oxygen is conducted in the presence of a catalyst containing iodine simple substance, or an iodide liberating iodine such as iodohydrin, a nitrogen oxide giving NO- 2 such as nitric acid or notrogen minooxide and further sulfuric acid as a cocatalyst to produce alkylene glycol ester of formual III and IV.
EFFECT: Smooth operations can be continued since the reaction rate and selectivity do not lower.
USE: Solvents, starting material for polyester and antifreezer.
