Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a high purity terephthalic acid, and to reduce the loss of bromine catalyst, by the liquid-phase oxidation of p-xylene or its oxidation intermediate, in the presence of a Co-Mn-Br catalyst wherein the bromine component is a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid bromoalkyl ester.
CONSTITUTION: Terephthalic acid is prepared by the liquid phase oxidation of p-xylene or its oxidation intermediate with gas containing molecular oxygen, in acetic acid solvent, in the presenece of an oxidation catalyst comprising Co, Mn and Br, wherein the Br component is a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid bromoalkyl ester, e.g. dibromoethyl acetate, dibromopropyl acetate, etc.
EFFECT: The addition of bromine component during the recycling of the reaction mother liquor can be reduced, since the oxidation loss of the bromine component of this invention is low.
