Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polyester having improved color tone in both yellowness and lightness, by reacting (A) a raw material terephthalic acid previously in contact with the exhaust gas from a production process of terephthalic acid with (B) ethylene glycol.
CONSTITUTION: A material terephthalic acid is brought into contact with a gas obtained by recovering acetic acid from an exhaust gas emitted in an oxidation reactor wherein p-xylene is oxidized by molecular oxygen in the presence of a heavy metal catalyst in a solvent of acetic acid in the production of a polyester from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. The reason why improved color tone in both yellowness and lightness is obtained by the contact is presumed that properites of the material phthalic acid are effected by the interaction of the substances existing in a trace amount such as acetaldehyde, methyl acetate, methanol, and other various ingredients contained in the oxidation exhaust gas.
