Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for the organic synthesis or an intermediate for perfumes, etc. in high yield, by the oxidation of a lower aliphatic carboxylic benzyl ester in the liquid phase with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of an oxidizing catalyst and a zinc compound.
CONSTITUTION: A lower aliphatic carboxylic benzyl ester or its nuclear substitution compound is oxidized in the liquid phase with a gas containing molecular oxygen, e.g. oxygen gas, in the presence of a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid or an acid anhydride thereof and a catalyst consisting of a heavy metallic compound having an oxidizing ability, a zinc compound and a bromine compound, e.g. cobalt acetate, cerium acetate, ammonium bromide and zinc acetate, to give a benzylidene bis(lower aliphatic carboxylate), e.g. benzylidene diacetate. The yield may be improved even with an inexpensive gas containing molecular oxygen. Benzaldehyde, etc. may be produced from the resultant benzylidene compound.
