Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for vinyl acetate, polyester resin, etc., readily and in high selectivity, by the reaction of acetic anhydride with hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium and an iodine compounds, without using acetaldehyde.
CONSTITUTION: Acetic anhydride is reacted with hydrogen, in the presence of a rhodium compound, e.g. rhodium nitrate, rhodium chloride, or chlorocarbonylbis (triphenyphosphine)rhodium, in an amount of around 100W30,000ppm as rhodium metal based on the whole reaction medium, and an iodine compound, e.g. methyl or acetyl iodide, in a molar amount of 50W200 times, preferably in the range of 100W200 times, that of rhodium, to obtain ethylidene diacetate.
