Abstract
PURPOSE: The oxidation reaction of an α,β-unsaturated aliphatic aldehyde and an alcohol with molecular oxygen in conducted in the presence of a specific catalyst to produce in one step an α,β-unsaturated carboxylic ester in high yield and selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: The oxidation reaction of an α,β-unsaturated apliphatic aldehyde of formual I (R1-3 are H or alkyl) such as methacrolein and an alcohol of formula: R4-OH (R4 is 1W20C alkyl) with molecular oxygen is conducted in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (a) at least one from Pd or its compounds, (b) at least one from Pd and its compounds and (c) calcium carbonate at 0W100°C to produce the objective compound of formula II such as methyl methacrylate. The component Pd in the catalyst is preferably metal Pd and the component Pd is preferably lead oxide, hydroxide or acetate. These components may be supported on activated carbon and others; however, most preferably Pd metal and lead acetate are supported on calcium carbonate.
