CONSTITUTION: The objective compound is prepared by contacting styrene, an alcohol, carbon monoxide, and oxygen with each other, in an ethylene glycol ether solvent such as ethylene methyl ether, etc.,o in the presence of a catalyst comprising a platinum group metal or its salt, pref. palladium or palladium chloride, a cocatalyst comprising a copper or an iron salt, and a reaction accelerator selected from hydroxide, carbonate or acetate of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal. The partial pressure of carbon monoxide is pref. maintained at ≤30kg/cm2, esp. 0.05W25kg/cm2. The reaction temperature is 30W200°C, pref. 50W150°C.
