Abstract
PURPOSE: In the reaction between an aldehyde and an alcohol in the presence of oxygen, a catalyst consisting of Pd that is active even at lower temperatures, lead or mercury and an alkaline earth metal is used to produce readily title compound in high yield with no side reaction.
CONSTITUTION: In the reaction between an aldehyde such as acrolein or methcarolein and an alcohol such as methanol or ethanol in the presence of oxygen, a catalyst consisting of a Pd compoud selected from metal Pd, its acetate, sulfate and others, a compound selected from lead, mercury or thallium or their acetates, carbonates oxides and another compound selected from alkaline earth metals, zinc or cadmium or their oxides, hydroxides carbontaes or sulfates, is used to form an carboxylic ester. The amount of Pd is 0.5W20wt%, lead or mercury is 0.01W 20wt% and the third component is preferably 2W95wt% in the catalyst.
