Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound by the reaction of an aldehyde and an alcohol in the presence of oxygen, using a catalyst comprising a metal compound containing Pd and at least one element selected from Pb, Hg, Tl and Bi, or the above compound and an alkali(ne earth) metal compound.
CONSTITUTION: An aldehyde is made to react with an alcohol in the presence of O2, using a catalyst which comprises a metal compound containing Pd and at least one element selected from Pb, Hg, Tl and Bi (e.g. Pd3Pb1), or the above compound and an alkali(ne earth) metal compound, to give the title compound. The above-mentioned catalyst can be prepared as follows: An aqueous solution, which contains a soluble Pd, Hg, Tl or Bi compound and, if necessary, an alkali(ne earth) metal compound, is impregnated into a carrier and dried. Then the carrier is immersed in an acidic aqueous solution of PdCl2 etc. with heating and reduced.
EFFECT: The above catalyst has a long as well as high activity and high selectivity.
