Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a precursor of ascorbic acid, in one step, by oxidizing L-sorbose with an oxygen-containing gas using a catalyst obtained by adding Pb or Bi as the second component to Pt or Pd.
CONSTITUTION: 2-Keto-L-gulonic acid is prepared by the oxidation of L-sorbose with an oxygen-containing gas in an aqueous solution in the presence of a catalyst containing Pt and/or Pd and Pb and/or Bi, keeping the pH of the reaction liquid at 6W10. The catalyst is obtained by supporting the metal or oxide of Pt or Pd, and the metal, hydroxide, oxide, carbonate, organic acid salt, etc. of Pb or Bi on a carrier such as activated charcoal, alumina, etc. The amount of supported Pt or Pd is 0.5W5wt%, and that of Pb or Bi is 1W5wt%. The amount of the catalyst is preferably 10W50g per 1l of the reaction liquid.
