Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate raw material for medicines, perfumes, etc. in high yield, by oxidizing a 4-hydroxyphenylglycine with a gas containing oxygen in a basic aqueous solution.
CONSTITUTION: A 4-hydroxyphenylglycine of formulaI(X is H, OH, halogen, lower alkyl or lower alkoxyl) is oxidized with a gas containing oxygen in a feed volume of 0.05W0.5Nl/min based on one l reaction solution in a basic aqueous solution at 90W130°C for 1W2.5hr at normal or higher pressure to give the aimed compound of formula II. The basic aqueous solution is prepared by dissolving a basic substance, e.g. NaOH or K2CO3, in water. The amount of the basic substance to be used is 2W6mol based on one mole compound of formulaI. The concentration of the compound of formulaIin the reaction mixture is preferably 0.5W15wt%. The yield is further improved if necessary by adding a metallic catalyst, e.g. a simple substance such as copper, an oxide, hydroxide or acetate salt, thereto, and the reaction time is reduced.
