Abstract
PURPOSE: The catalytic oxidation of an aromatic compound bearing a secondary alkyl with a gas containing molecular oxygen is effected in liquid phase in the presence of a transition metal complex as a catalyst to produce an aromatic hydroperoxide that is a precursor of a phenol in a short time in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: A gas containing molecular oxygen is brought into contact with the liquid phase consisting of an oily phase containing an aromatic compound bearing a secondary alkyl and another basic aqueous phase under stirring to form an aromatic hydroperoxide. At this time, the use of an ammine complex of transition metal such copper, silver, zinc or so increases the oxidation rate and gives the objective compound in high selectivity. The amount of the catalyst used preferably ranges from 0.005 to 10ppm as the concentration of the transition metal atom in the liquid phase. The pH of the basic aqueous phase is preferably 7.7W10.
