Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound by reacting a phenolic compound having H atom at the o-position with an alcohol using an excellent catalyst composed of chromium oxide, tin oxide, and a compound selected from germanium oxide, silicon oxide and lead oxide.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of the titled compound by the gas-phase catalytic reaction of a phenolic compound having hydrogen atom at the ortho-position with an alcohol, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst composed of chromium oxide, tin oxide, and at least one component selected from germanium oxide, silicon oxide and lead oxide, and optionally at least one component selected from iron oxide, sulfate radical, alkali metal, and alkaline earth metal. The catalyst has excellent activity at low temperature, high stability, and low rate of deposition of hydrocarbons to the surface of the catalyst.
