Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compounds in high selectivity, suppressing the decomposition reaction of methanol, by reacting phenols having hydrogen at ortho position with methanol, using a catalyst comprising long-life iron oxide and specific metal oxides.
CONSTITUTION: Ortho-methylated phenols are produced by reacting phenols having hydrogen at ortho position (e.g. o-cresol, m-cresol, 2,3-xylenol, etc.) with methanol under heating, in the presence of a catalyst containing iron oxide and at least one compound selected from tin oxide, zirconium oxide, molybdenum oxide and tungsten oxide. The amount of the metal oxide is 0.01W0.15 gram atom per 1 gram atom of iron of iron oxide. Vsually the reaction is carried out in the vapor phase at 300W400°C.
