Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain indole in high yield in high selectivity, by subjecting o-ethynylaniline to ring formation through dehydration using a catalyst comprising an oxide of W or Mn or a catalyst comprising both the elements in the form of compound or mixture.
CONSTITUTION: Using a catalyst comprising an oxide of W or Mn or one comprising both the elements in the form of compound or mixture, o-ethynylaniline is reacted with an O2-containing gas in gaseous phase, to prepare indole. The catalyst comprising W and Mn in the form of compound or mixture provides extremely excellent result. The amount of the oxide in the catalyst is preferably 5W50wt%, especially 5W20wt%. An atom ratio of W to Mn of the coexistence type is (1/1)W(10/1), preferably (2/1)W(3/1). The reaction temperature is 550W 700°C, preferably 550W650°C.
