Abstract

PURPOSE: In preparing the titled compound by the reaction between a phenol having hydrogen at an ortho position and methanol, a catalyst having high selectively for ortho position and a long pot life, comprising an iron oxide, metallic oxide, and basic alkaline metallic compound, is used.
CONSTITUTION: In reacting a phenol (e.g., phenol or cresol) having hydrogen at ortho position with methanol to give the titled compound, a catalyst consisting of (A) an iron oxide, (B) gallium oxide, germanium oxide, hafnium oxide, etc. and (C) a basic alkaline metallic compound (e.g., potassium carbonate) is used in the reaction. A bleding ratio in the catalyst is 1g iron atom of the ingredient A, 0.005W 0.15g atom of the ingredient B, and 0.0005W0.05g atom calculated as alkaline metallic atom of the ingredient C. The reaction temperature is 300W400°C.
EFFECT: The decomposition reaction of methanol is suppressed.
USE: A raw material for preparing a resin.
