Abstract
PURPOSE: In preparing the titled compound by the reaction between a phenol having hydrogen at an ortho position and methanol, a catalyst comprising an iron oxide obtained by sintering a mixture of an iron compound and a colloidal metallic compound and a metallic oxide is used.
CONSTITUTION: In reacting a phenol having a hydrogen at an ortho position with methanol to give the titled compound, a catalyst consisting of (A) an iron oxide and (B) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of gallium oxide, germanium oxide, hafnium oxide, etc. as main ingredients is used in the reaction. The catalyst is obtained by sintering a solid mixture at 400W600°C which is prepared from a dispersed blend comprising an iron compound and a colloidal compound of a metal, e.g., gallium, germanium, hafnium, etc. and it has 0.005W0.15g atom of the ingredient B based on 1g iron atom of the ingredient A.
EFFECT: Having high selectively for ortho position and the decomposition reaction of methanol is suppressed.
USE: A raw material for preparing a resin.
