Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in high selectivity, by the selective methylation of phenols at the ortho-position in the presence of a highly active and long-life catalyst composed of a mixture of iron oxide, the second component such as germanium oxide, etc., and the third component such as magnesium oxide, etc.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound useful as a raw material of polyphenylene oxide resin, is prepared by reacting phenols having one or more H atoms at ortho- position with methanol, at 300W400°C under a pressure of 1W30kg/cm2G, pref. in gaseous phase, in the presence of a three-component catalyst composed of (A) iron oxide, (B) the second component composed of one or more metal oxides selected from gallium oxide, germanium oxide, yttrium oxide, niobium oxide, hafnium oxide, tantalum oxide and bismuth oxide, and (C) the third component composed of one or more substance selected from magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, silicon oxide, and carbon.
EFFECT: The decomposition of methanol can be suppressed.
