Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for synthesizing oxalic acid, etc. by a method wherein the desired substance is not attached to a device, by reacting CO with methyl nitrite in a gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst, and condensing the reaction mixed gas while being brought into contact with methanol.
CONSTITUTION: A raw material gas comprising CO and methyl nitrite is introduced into a reactor filled with a catalyst of a platinum group metal and subjected to a reaction in a gaseous phase. Pd is preferable as the catalyst, and it is supported by a carrier, e.g., active carbon, etc. for use. The reaction is carried out at 50W200°C at normal pressure. The reaction mixed gas is cooled and condesed while it is brought into contact with methanol, the prepared condensate is subjected to a simple operation, e.g., distillation, etc. to separate dimethyl oxalate from it. The presence of methanol prevents dimethyl oxalate in the device from separating out, and increases characteristically the reaction yield.
