Abstract

PURPOSE: To prolong the catalytic life in reacting acetic anhydride with hydrogen in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst of Pd, Pt or Rh supported on a carrier to obtain acetaldehyde, by feeding a gas for the reaction accompanied with a specific amount of acetic acid.
CONSTITUTION: Acetic acid is reacted with hydrogen in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst of Pd, Pt or Rh supported on a carrier, e.g. alumina or silica, to give acetaldehyde. In the process, a gas for the reaction is accompained with 3mol% or more, preferably 10W100mol%, based on the acetic anhydride, acetic acid to maintain the catalystic activity life stably for a long time. The content of the acetic anhydride in the raw gaseous mixture is 5W40%, and the molar ratio between the acetic anhydride and the hydrogen is (1/20)W(5/1), the reaction is carried out preferably at 100W200°C.
