Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain methanol selectively under mild condition, by reacting a gas containing carbon oxide and H2 in the presence of a platinum cluster catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Methanol is produced by reacting a gas containing carbon oxide (CO and/or CO2) and H2 in the presence of a platinum cluster catalyst comprising a platinum luster and an oxide of IIa, IIb, IIIa or IVa group metals. A platinum carbonyl cluster compound is dissolved in an inert solvent, a metal oxide is added and impregnated thereto with stirring, the product is heat treated after removing the solvent, and the platinum cluster is suported and fixed, to obtain the objective catalyst. The heat treatment is preferably carried out (1) under an inert atmosphere or (2) under H2 gas and under a mixed gas of H2 and CO, and the heating temperature is 50W350°C. The reaction is carried out under reduced or elevated pressure of a mixed gas at 50W450°C, and the ratio of CO:H2 in the gas is 20:1W1:20.
