Abstract

PURPOSE: To promote reduction reaction rapidly even under a moderate condition by subjecting substances and reductive gas in aqueous solution to a catalytic reaction over a water-repellent solid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A reducible ion or molecule present in aqueous solution is directly brought into contact with a reductive gas, e.g., carbon monoxide, hydrogen, etc., introduced into the aqueous solution in the presence of a water-repellent solid catalyst, prepared by treating a hydrophilic catalyst by a water repelling treatment or by using a water-repellent supporter. Whereupon, reduction reaction is rapidly promoted without covering all surface of the catalyst with the aqueous solution because the reductive gas is adsorbed in the surface of the catalyst and easily comes into contact with the reducible substance.
