Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an industrial raw material, in high activity and ortho-selectivity, at low reaction temperature, by methylating a phenolic compound with methanol using a catalyst containing iron oxide, indium oxide, and chromium oxide.
CONSTITUTION: An ortho-methylated phenolic compound is prepared by the vapor-phase catalytic reaction of a phenolic compound having at least one H atom at ortho position with methanol in the presence of a catalyst containing an ion oxide such as Fe2O3, Fe3O4, FeO, etc., an indium oxide such as In2O3, InO, etc.m and a chrominum oxide such as CrO, Cr2O3, CrO2, CrO3, etc. The atomic ratios of Fe:In:Cr in the catalyst are pref. 100:(0.5W50):(0.05W20), more pref. 100: (1W 30):(0.3W10).
EFFECT: The methanol utilization is also high.
