Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an ortho-methylated phenolic compound, in high ortho- selectivity and yield, by ortho-methylating a phenolic compound with methanol using a highly active catalyst consisting of iron oxide, indium oxide, and silica.
CONSTITUTION: An ortho-methylated phenolic compound is prepared by the vapor-phase catalytic reaction of a phenolic compound having at least one H atom at ortho-position with methanol in the presence of a catalyst consisting of iron oxide such as Fe2O3, Fe3O4, FeO, etc., an indium oxide such as In2O3, InO, etc., and silica. The atomic ratios of Fe:In:Si in the catalyst are pref. 100:(0.5W 50): (0.05W10), more pref. 100:(1W30):(0.1W5).
EFFECT: High methanol utilization, and extremely high durability of the catalytic activity.
