Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a carboxylic acid ester in high selectivity, by the reaction of a primary alcohol alone or with a secondary alcohol in the presence of a catalyst containing a specific intermetallic compound and oxygen, and by keeping the high catalytic activity for a long term.
CONSTITUTION: A primary alcohol alone, preferably allyl alcohol, or a combination of methallyl alcohol with methanol or ethanol, or with a secondary alcohol is reacted, in the presence of oxygen and i) an intermetallic compound containing palladium and one or more elements selected from lead, mercury, thallium or bismuth, or further ii) one or more compounds selected from alkali metal compounds and alkali earth metal compounds as a catalyst. According to the method, the evolution of carbon dioxide is prevented, and the carboxylic acid ester can be obtained in high selectivity in one stage with a high catalytic activity for a long term.
