Abstract
PURPOSE: To reduce the combustion loss of the acetic acid solvent in the preparation of high purity terephthalic acid in one plant, by catalytically oxidizing p-xylene under specific conditions, carrying out the additional oxidation at low temperature, raising the pressure, and carrying out the additional oxidation in the course of temperature increase before the high temperature additional oxidation.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of p-xylene with molecular oxygen in acetic acid solvent in the presence of a catalyst containing heavy metal and bromine, is carried out as follows. (i) ≥95wt% of the p-xylene is oxidized (1) to terephthalic acid at 180W230°C. (ii) The oxidation mixture is subjected to the additional oxidation (2) at a temperature lower than the above temperature by 0W50°C. (iii) The pressure of the system is increased (3), and heated (4) at ≥235°C while carrying out the additional oxidation with 0.003mol, besed on 1mol of the terephthalic acid, of molecular oxygen. (iv) Additional oxidation is further carried out (5) at ≥235°C under the above condition of the amount of molecular oxygen. (v)The product is crystallized (6) and filtered (7) to obtain the high purity terephthalic acid which can be directly used as a raw material of a polyester, continuously.
