Abstract

PURPOSE: A suspension containing terephthalic acid resulting from oxidation of organic aromatic compounds in liquid phase is continuously brought into contact with acetic acid countercurrently, thus obtaining high-purity terephthalic acid crystals which can be used for direct polycondensation.
CONSTITUTION: Terephthalic acid is obtained by oxidizing organic aromatic compounds in liquid phase in a lower aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with a gas containing molecular oxygen, wherein the suspension of reaction product is slowly brought into contact with water-containing acetic acid countercurrently at a temperature not more than 10°C lower than the oxidation reaction temperature in the same tower, whereby the reaction mother liquor is replaced with the water-containing acetic acid and simultaneously impurities are extracted from the crystals of terephthalic acid, thus giving the suspension containing high-purity terephthalic acid.
