Abstract
PURPOSE: In carboxylic acid production from alkyl benzene, etc, nondessociable bromine in reaction mother liquor is easily and efficiently recovered by distillation.
CONSTITUTION: To produce carboxylic acid, alkyl benzene or its derivatives such as para-xylene is oxidized in liquid phase by molecular oxygen containing gas, in lower aliphatic monocarboxylic acid by using oxidizing catalyst consisting of heavy metal and bromine. In this reaction, nondissociable bromine in the reaction mother liquor is distilled in two steps, while controlling vaper temperature and distillation pressure. Then, lower aliphatic monocarboxylic acid is first distilled followed by lower aliphatic carboxylic acid and nondessociable bromine, which is separated. This simple procedure easily recovers bromine in high yield.
