Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare isobutyric acid useful as food additives, etc., in high conversion and yield, by the continuous oxidation of isobutylaldehyde with O2, etc., using two oxidation reactors wherein the reaction temperatures are different from each other, thereby reducing the residence time of the reaction mixture.
CONSTITUTION: Isobutyric acid is prepared continuously by (1) oxidizing isobutylaldehyde with O2 or an O2-containing gas, in liquid phase, in the presence of an alkali metal-containing compound at 50W70°C, pref. 55W65°C in a first-stage bubble column reactor while keeping the degree of conversion below 95%, and (2) further oxidizing the product of the first-stage reactor, in a second-stage reactor at a temperature higher than that of the first-stage reaction, pref. by ≥5°C, e.g. 70W85 °C. The average residence times in the first and the second bubble columns are 1W10 hours, pref. 2W8 hours, and 2W3 hours, respectively.
USE: Raw material of methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate.
