Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound exhibiting little discoloration by acid neutralization, by distilling the crude title compound obtained from the reaction product of ethylene oxide and ammonia, and contacting the distillate immediately after the distillation, with an oxygen-containing gas in a specific temperature range.
CONSTITUTION: Purified triethanolamine which exhibits little discoloration by acid neutralization, is prepared by (1) separating crude triethanolamine from the reaction product of ethylene oxide and ammonia by vacuum distillation, and (2) contacting the distillate with an oxygen-containing gas at 25W100°C within 50hr from the distillation (pref. immediately after the distillation). The oxygen-containing gas is a mixture of oxygen and other inert gas, pref. air. The contact can be carried out batchwise or continuously.
EFFECT: The purification can be carried out without using complicated apparatuses, or additives.
USE: Raw materials of cosmetics, detergents, etc.
