Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain 3-methyl-butanol and 3-methylbutanol useful as intermediates for perfumes and medicines, by bringing a mixture of 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol and 3- methylbutanol in the vapor phase at a specific temperature into contact with a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture consisting mainly of 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol (A) and 3- methylbutanol (B) is brought into contact with a catalyst at 180W300°C to convert A into 3-methylbutanol selectively. Copper oxide-zinc oxide catalyst consisting mainly of CuO and ZnO and copper oxide-chromium oxide catalyst consisting mainly of CuO and Cr2O4 are used as the catalyst, preferably in the form of a fixed bed to improve the conversion. The space velocity of the mixture to be fed into the catalyst bed is 100W1,000 hr-1. 3-Methylbutanol is readily obtained by distilling the mixture after condensation of the reaction gas.
