Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate 3-methylbutanal and 3-methylbutanol, which are useful as industrial raw materials, easily in high purity, by treating a mixture of 3-methyl-3- buten-1-ol and 3-methylbutanol with a specific catalyst, thereby converting the former into 3-methylbutanal, and then distilling the reaction product.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture containing 3-methyl-3-buten-ol and 3-methylbutanol as principal constituents, which is, forexample, by-produced in the production of isoprene, is treated with copper oxide-zinc oxide catalyst or copper oxide-chromium oxide catalyst in a non-oxidizing atmosphere at 180W250°C, to isomerize 3-methyl- 3-buten-1-o1 to 3-methylbutanal. Thereafter, the mixture of 3-methylbutanal and 3-methylbutanol is distilled, to separate both components.
USE: 3-Methylbutanol and 3-methylbutanal are useful as intermediates for syntheses of performes, medicines, agricultural chemicals, surface-active agents, etc.
