PURPOSE: To prepare angelic acid or its ester useful as a raw material of perfume, easily, in high yield, by isomerizing tiglic acid or its ester in the presence of an organic sulfinic acid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Tiglic acid or its ester of formulaI[R is alcohol residue, i.e. ≤20C saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group which may contain other functional group (alcohol, ether, ester, etc.), ≤20C saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group containing cyclic structure, etc.]is isomerized in the presence of an organic sulfinic acid catalyst of formula II (R' is hydrocarbon group such as aryl, alkyl, etc. which may contain other functional group in an amount not to hinder the catalytic action), esp. p-toluenesulfinic acid or benzene-sulfinic acid, pref. at 50W170°C to obtain angelic acid or its ester of formulaI. The amount of the catalyst is pref. 0.05W2% of the compound of formulaI.
