Abstract

PURPOSE: To carry out the selective and quantitative hydrogenation of an acetylenic unsaturated bond to a carbon-carbon double bond, by using a Pd catalyst and a reaction suppressing agent comprising a thiourea such as N,N'-diethyl thiourea.
CONSTITUTION: A compound having at least one acetylenic unsaturated bond (especially effective to acetylene alcohol) is hydrogenated in the presence of a Pd catalyst to obtain a compound having an ethylenic unsaturated bond (e.g. 3,7,11- trimethyl-1,6,10-dodecatrien-3-ol). The hydrogenation is carried out by adding a thiourea of formula I [R and R' are H or 1W8C alkyl, or R and R' may together form an alkylene of formula II (R1 and R2 are H or 1W5c alkyl; n is 2 or 3)] (e.g. ethylene thiourea), to the reaction system.
USE: Intermediate for organic syntheses, pharmaceuticals, synthetic perfumes, etc.
