Abstract

PURPOSE: To isolate the title compound in high yield by reacting acetone with H2 in an aqueous phase in the presence of a condensation hydrogenation catalyst containing Pd metal, and, without purifying, reacting the product with H2 in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst comprising Pd.
CONSTITUTION: Acentone and H2 are allowed to react in an aqueous phase under the generally known reaction conditions in the presence of a condensation hydrogenation catalyst comprising Pd metal and a phosphate of more than one sort metal selected from Ti, Zr, Hf and Sn, or a strongly acidic cation exchange resin. The reaction mixture is, without purification, subjected to the treatment at 80-230°C under 10-60 atm at ≥ LHSV30hr-1 of the above reaction mixture to obtain methylisobutylketone.
EFFECT: Mesityl oxide byproduced in the former reaction at low temperature can be readily transformed into the objective compound in the latter hydrogenation process and the catalytic reactivity can be prolonged
