Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a high purity terephthalic acid for direct polymerization use, having excellent slurrifying characteristics, with low oxidation loss of the acetic acid solvent, by carrying out secific two-stage immersion treatment of a crude product obtained by the relatively mild single stage oxidation of p-xylene.
CONSTITUTION: p-Xylene is oxidized with an O2-containing gas in acetic acid solvent at 170-230°C under pressure, in the presence of a Co-Mn-Br catalyst, and a crude product containing 500-3000 ppm of 4-carboxybenzaldehyde and having an optical density of ≤0.3 at a wave length of 340 mμ is obtained. More than 60 wt% of the above oxidation product is separated and recycled to the oxidation reactor, and the remaining part of the product is added with 2-10 weight times of hot acetic acid to obtain an acetic acid dispersion of crude terephthalic acid. The dispersion is subjected to the primary immersion treatment under agitation at a temperature between the oxidation temperature and 240°C, and then to the secondary immersion treatment under agitation at a temperature lower than the primary treating temperature by at least 10°C, to obtain the high quality terephthalic acid.
