Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain ethylene with hardly any side reaction, by introducing ethanol in the presence of a catalyst into a multitubular external heating type isothermal reactor, subjecting the ethanol to dehydrating reaction with suppressed conversion rate within a specific temperature range and introducing the resultant reaction product into an adiabatic reactor. CONSTITUTION:Ethanol in the presence of a catalyst (preferably alumina) is introduced into a multitubular external heating type isothermal reactor and subjected to dehydrating reaction at 350-450 deg.C under condition so as to provide <=95% (preferably 75-95%) ethanol conversion rate and the resultant reaction product is then introduced into an adiabatic reactor to react the unreacted ethanol and afford the aimed ethylene in high conversion rate while suppressing side reaction, such as deposition of carbonaceous materials. A smaller amount of the catalyst than that used in an isothermal reactor only in one stage is sufficient and deterioration in activity is suppressed. Furthermore, use of steam in a larger amount than that employed in the adiabatic reaction only in one stage is not required.
