Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare methacrylic acid in high yield, without the steps of the separation, recovery and purification of methacrolein, by oxidizing methacrolein, separating the produced methacrylic acid, re-oxidizing the unreacted raw material, and fractionating the product by multi-stage condensation.
CONSTITUTION: Methacrolein (or a mixture containing the same) prepared in a reactor 2 is subjected to the first sgate oxidation by contacting with molecular oxygen in a reactor 4. The reaction product is sent to a separator 6, and the produced methacrylic acid is separated, e.g. by absorbing in a solvent (first stage separation). The absorbed methacrylic acid is recovered through a pipe 19, and the mixture containing unreacted methacrolein is subjected to the second stage oxidation in a reactor 8. The oxidation product is introduced to a condenser 10, and a part of the methacrylic acid is condensed at e.g. 40W80°C and recovered through a pipe 18. Uncondensed component is sent to a separator 12, where the second stage separation is carried out by, e.g. absorbing in a solvent cooled below room temp.
