Abstract

PURPOSE: Title compound used for analytical reagents and solvents is continuously produced by novel industrial process of four steps including the reaction between an alcohol, nitrite ester, carbon monoxide and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The catalyst reaction under pressure in reactor 1 is conduced by supplying a mixture of an alcohol containing a metal catalyst of platinum group with a nitrite ester from pipe 14 and a gas containing carbon monoxide and oxygen from pipe 15 to reactor 1. The reaction mixture is introduced through pipe 18 into dehydrator 2 and water formed by dehydration is distilled off along with the nitrite ester and separated in separator 3 and taken out of pipe 22. The nitrite ester is recycled through pipe 21. When the waste gas contains a small amount of the alcohol and nitrite ester, it is cooled to condense them, which are recycled to the reaction. A part of the dehydrated mixture is circulated through pipe 32 and the rest is introduced through pipe 28 to distillation column 4. The fractions of the nitrite ester and alcohol are circulated through pipes 31 and 32 and the product mixture containing oxalic diester is obtained from pipe 29.
USE: Starting materials for oxalic acid, oxamide, orotic acid, glycolic acid, ethylene glycol and others.
