Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound industially, advantageously and continuously, by hydrogenating an oxalic diester obtained in the vapor phase reaction of CO with a nitrous ester as a raw material, and regenerating the reaction by-product to the nitrous ester.
CONSTITUTION: CO is brought into contact with a gas containing a nitrous ester in the vapor phase in the presence of platinum group metallic solid catalyst, and the resultant product containing an oxalic diester is fed to a condenser 2. The uncondensed gas is fed to a regenerating column 3, and the condensate is fed to a heater 4 and brought into contact with hydrogen from a conduit 32, and reacted catalytically in a reactor 5 packed with a hydrogeneting catalyst. The reaction product gas is then condensed in a condenser 7, and an alcohol is distilled in a distilling column 8 and sent to the regenerating column 3. The distillation residue is sent to a disilling column 9 to distill a glycolic ester formed as a by-product. Thus, the aimed compound is obtained from a conduit 45 as a distillation residue. The uncondensed gas is brought into contact with a gas containing O2 from a conduit 27 in the regenerating column 3 and the alcohl from a conduit 28 in the regenerating column 3 to regenerate the nitrous ester, which is then circulated and fed to the reactor 1.
