Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of polyester, etc., from alkylene oxide through alkylene carbonate, in high purity and yield, and economically in an industrial scale, by using proper catalyst and process.
CONSTITUTION: A monoalkylene glycol can be prepared by the following steps. (i) Reaction of an alkylene oxide with CO2 in the presence of the reaction intermediate (alkylene carbonate) and a carbonating catalyst (alkali metal halide). (ii) Separation of the produced liquid containing the intermediate into gas and liquid (10). (iii) Distillation of the liquid phase to separated the intermediate in the distillate, recovery (20) of the catalyst from the ?bottom in the form of the intermediate solution, and recycling of the recovered catalyst to the reactor 1. (iv) Recovery (58) of the unliquefied intermediate by cooling with an absorbing in the absorbing liquid. (v) Hydrolysis (28) of the intermediate mixture liquid obtained from the steps iii and iv with water in the presence of a fixed bed hydrolysis catalyst (activated alumina) to obtain a liquid containing the titled compound. (vi) Separation of the liquid into gas and liquid. (vii) Dehumidification (55) of the gaseous phase (CO2) of the steps ii and vi, and recycling to the reactor 1. (viii) Distillation and dehydration of the liquid produced in the step vi. (ix) Fractional distillation (44) of the hydedrated product.
