Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound advantageously, by reacting an alkylene oxide with water in the presence of a specific catalyst under specific conditions in the first stage, recovering the catalyst from the resultant solution and recycling the catalyst to the first stage in the second stage, and dehydrating the distillate in the third stage.
CONSTITUTION: (I) An alkylene oxide and water are fed into a reactor with a catalyst solution containing a compound of molybdenum and/or tungsten, and reacted at pH 5W10, to prepare the resultant solution containing the titled compound in the first stage. (II) The resultant solution is then fed into a catalyst recovering tower, and separated through a distilling procedure into a distillate containing the titled compound and bottoms from the catalyst recovering tower containing water in an amount of 0.1wt% or more based on the catalyst. The latter is recycled to the above-mentioned reactor in the second stage. (III) The distillate is further fed into a dehydrating tower to distill water, and the bottoms are fed into the stage for the separation of the titled compound in the third stage. In these three stages (I), (II) and (III) mentioned above, the titled compound useful as a raw material for a polyester, etc., is obtained in high purity and continuously, on an industrial scale.
